ADR Training

Class 8 – Corrosive

Corrosive substances cause irreversible damage to skin and also affect other materials.  Corrosive substances are often either acids or alkalis.  The level of damage a corrosive substance causes depends on:

  • The temperature – the damage double for every 10oC rise

  • The concentration – more concentrated corrosives do more damage

  • The type of corrosive substance – some corrosive substances are worse than others

  • The exposure time – the longer the exposure, the worse the damage

Any exposure to corrosive substances should immediately be dealt with.  The affected area should be put immediately under a flow of water (emergency showers), then any contaminated clothing should be removed.  Any skin exposed to corrosives should be rinsed for at least 20 minutes, then medical attention should be sought.  Antidotes may be required (such as calcium gluconate).

The packing groups of corrosives is based on the exposure time and the observation time before damage is apparent.

If a Class 8 substance is spilled, it should only be contained if it is safe to do so.  Never place yourself at risk.

Spillages are dealt with by experts.  Drivers should never attempt to deal with it as adding water to concentrated acids or alkalis results in great heat, which massively increases risks of injury and death.  For this reason also drivers should never attempt to neutralise an acid with an alkali or vice versa.

Class 8 substances may also be flammable, toxic and oxidising.

The minimum PPE required for class 8 includes goggles, gloves and a high visibility vest, although often a full bod protective suit is required, along with a visor.
